The Hume Family Page

Our knowledge of the Hume family begins with Eli Dawson Hume born 1757 in Manchester, England. In 1773, aged 16, he emigrated of "his own free will" to Philadelphia.

Eli Dawson April 5, 1784 received a land grant of town lot no. 951, Parrtown, St. John, New Brunswick. In May, 1814, aged about 57, Eli submitted a petition for land in Cape Breton, Novia Scotia. The district was called Manchester.

Eli married the widow of a Mr. Lamb and had four children. Peter, George, Ann and John Dawson. John Dawson Hume was born in 1792 in New Brunswick. He became a cooper by trade and married Hannah Upton. Their land was poor and they left it to move to Prince Edward Island.

John Dawson and Hannah had 14 children. They were Rebecca Anne, Peter, Sarah, Hanna, Eunice, Margaret, Mary, David Henry, Samuel, John, Charles, William and two more daughters (names unknown).

Peter married Mary Compton and had eleven children. Rebecca Anne, David Henry, Charles William, Hannah, George Hill, Joseph Benjamin, John, Wellington, James, Mary and Elizabeth.

Elizabeth was born July 8, 1867. She married Colin MacDougall, a widower with four children. Colin and Elizabeth had thirteen children.
